Extract from a recent edition of The Horsham Times, 2001?/b?

Horsham retiree John Harmer has reinvented himself as a golfer but his proudest sporting achievement was winning a 1948 three-mile Wimmera bicycle championship. Bicycles ruled the road after the Second World War when fuel was restricted and cars were scarce. Harmer was 22 when he took on the Wimmera's best riders after easily winning a two-mile Horsham championship the weekend before the race. The venue wa Horsham. City Oval's dirt track, which has since been replaced by grass. Harmer used a smaller gear than other most riders, which meant he had to pedal faster but with less power.

"The only guy I was worried about was Don Eldridge, a blacksmith from Antwerp. He was by far the best rider I had ridden against." Harmer said. "The race was fairly close. When you came into a corner, you had to stay on the inside. otherwise you would swing up and someone would get in beneath you." Harmer stuck to his tactics and out-rode Eldridge to win the chamnpionship, "Eldridge said to me later that he was waiting for me to swing up but I didn't."

When Harmer was presented with the winning sash, he noted that it was made using three ribbon strips sewn together. Organisers told him that wide sashes were unavailable because of suppy shortages after the war. He was invited to attend a county championship in Melbourne but the race was later cancelled. Harmer competed in races at Jung's Gymkhana, Dimboola's Regatta, Warracknabeal and Murtoa. "We raced at Warracknabeal on grass which was a bit dicey on the corners," Harmer said. "The front wheel would go out from under you so you had to let your tyres down a bit."

He said he got his inspiration from his father who was a greal rider. "I used to ask Dad If I was as a good as he was but he never gave a direct answer. Then one day a kid visited me ond asked for some riding tips. I told him to go and ask my Dad because he was a better rider. But the boy told me that he'd already seen Dad who had told him to come and see me because I was better." Harmer said he never reached the level of some Melbourne riders. In his early vears, John Harmer milked cows at Langlands and he later reconditioned engines at Repco for 35.vears.

Harmer, 75, has rediscovered himself as a golfer and in October last year he won a seniors tournament at Bright. In 1997 he won a Victorian country title at Warracknabeal, and he still competes every two weeks in seniors tournaments. Today he is playing in an Ararat tournament. He plays off a 12-Stroke handicap and said he enjoyed meeting people and playing with friends. Harmer's other sporting achievements include a Horsham carpet bowls title and scoring 62 not out in B Grade cricket after a string of ducks. "A sparrow looked as big as a pigeon after that," he said.

Harmer Family Newsletter, September 2002

?/b?My father, William Alfred Stacy, was born on 25 August 1901 in Gerang Gerung, he married my mother Eleanor May Johnson in Horsham in 1923. Alf and May had nine children who came along, one about every two years. My Grandfather William built our family home, a double brick. two bedroom house. Dad told us after the death of our mother, that during the building of their house, his father needed more money for materials, and the money saved for their honeymoon was needed. They never ever had a honeymoon, as the first child Alfred Wesley arrived early (that was their story) so I will stick with that! I was the sixth child to join the family in 1935. With so many children the second bedroom in the main house always had crammed into it, two double beds, and two of my sisters slept in each from what I can remember. The addition of a lean-to on the rear of our home served as a third bedroom where I slept until I married my wife Elaine in 1956 and moved away.

Alf's occupation right up until retirement, was that of a grocer's assistant making up customers' orders, making deliveries by horse and cart, serving behind the counter, bagging up spuds, bottling and wax sealing wine from large wooden kegs, Doing my family oral history, and asking Dad what he did when he needed to relieve himself whilst away from the shop, he told me "If you make out you'er adjusting the harness, one can pee down the horses front leg quite easily and no one is any the wiser"! My father, to my knowledge. worked over 40 years with the firm of Langlands Pty Ltd, retiring from the job aged 65. My father, in his younger days, was an ardent bike rider and my brother John was an exceptional rider as well, but my own efforts at bike racing were a dismal failure. Testament to their sporting prowess appears al the end of this article.

Dad had a heart attack in his early 60's but by taking care of his health, lived to take Mum away for many a year on holiday (Mum was an ardent fisherwoman). They spent their holidays towing an old caravan around most of the South of Eastern Australia. They both lived into their early 80's. We always said she could catch a fish in a bucket. When she caught fish, you'd have a look and there would be only about 2 inches of water - she was that lucky! I can still see Mum in my mind's eye drowning worms, rain, hail or shine. I ran her around the creek in the car to fish only months before she was hospitalised and passed away in 1983.

As children my siblings and I were always encouraged (perhaps made) to attend Sunday School at our Church of Christ each Sunday, and almost all, do so to this day. We wanted for nothing essential and to this day are still a very a close family. Get-togethers started by our parents when I was in my early 20s still continue - our Easter family camps in the Grampian Mountains bear witness to that. Nowadays attended by our children and grandchildren. We pegged out a nine hole golf area on land made available by the owner of the bush property, and competitions and handicaps are set each year. Some of us are almost beyond chasing a little white ball these days. A mountain creek is situated about 100 metres away from our camp and has perch and trout, though only Dad's grandson Gary goes fishing these days. On the Sunday whilst camping, we celebrate and hold a communion Church service together, the boys taking it in turn to preside. The offering taken up is given to the property owner as a thank-you gift for his kindness over the years. The maximum attendance at our family camps has been around the mid 80's in numbers, all sitting around a large open fire under the gum trees. singing, joking burning a couple of ton of wood each night. Us HARMERS, have much to be thankful for.

" Of medium build and in the prime of manhood, AIf Harmer occupies the front rank of wheelmen in Horsham and his name is widely known in the Wimmera as a rider of district merit. His success has been rapid and his rise from limit to scratch rider has been accomplished in only three seasons. He is very popular among his colleagues and is recognised as one of the truest sportsman on the wheel. Race after race he has had to plug along from scratch on his own, but with quiet determination he set open the field, riding the race every inch of the way. With marked consistency he collected a number of trophies. His scratch mark is an honoured one, and he regularly wins fastest time prizes.

His debut as a cyclist was in 1925 at Dimboola, and he finished in first place in the half mile, then rode 2nd in a similar race off 8 minutes in a 22 mile race. Then 1st in the 12 miler and 3rd in the 15 miler, the 4th fastest times. In a 9 miler at Rupanyup, a 12 mile, 25 mile and 15 mile at Horsham. (3 off scratch) and 1st off 1 minutes. He finished 2nd in a 2 mile track race at Rupanyup, and 2nd in a 10 mile aggregate race two weeks later.

AIf says he prefers early morning training to evening, because of loss of energy after a long day's work. His track riding has been limited to each seasons track carnival. He had never ridden the track previously, but nevertheless he was handicapped to 5-10 and 20 yards in the mile. 1 mile and 2 mile. He prefers road riding, but hopes to perform better in the next carnival. With 3 years connection with the club, he is practically the club veteran, but has many years ahead of him yet. AIf constitutes the kind of wheelman the Club is composed of, and to which the Horsham Club owes its great success.?h

7 (Research):?b?My Grandfather William Harmer
By Bert Harmer (11955)
Harmer Family Newsletter, September 1990?/b?

My Great Grandfather William Harmer (2326) was christened in Oving Sussex in 1834, one of 12 children of Edward Harmer (9901)and Harriet Stacey, who emigrated to Adelaide, Australia around 1840. (Heathfield Tree page 78).

William first married Maria Haines in 1854 whose parents were bonded to the Governor of the new colony on arrival in South Australia. By 1853 many settlers had left South Australia for the Gold Fields, many of these being School Teachers dissatisfied with their miserable pay, leading to the closure of many licensed schools in 1854. Around this time the Harmers too, left for the Gold Fields, travelling by wagon, and following the Murray River, it took many weeks to reach their destination in Maldon. Some settlers became discouraged and returned to Adelaide to pick up life where they left off, while others worked hard to make the gold pay. William and Maria had a son William (my grandfather 11052) whilst in Maldon, and after a disagreement with the partners of the mine as to which way to drive a shaft, sold up and returned to Adelaide. The new owners of the mine were to extract 1/2 a million pounds worth of gold from the mine - Harmer luck!

William, my grandfather, was only 18 months old, and his elder brother Ephraim, 5 years of age when Maria died. Some 19 months later their father William was to marry Caroline Barker on 13 December 1863, and as she didn't want the children of her future husband's first marriage, on 2 December 1863, 10 days before his fathers re-marriage, young William was adopted by his dead mother's brother Ephraim Haines and his wife Mary Ann (nee Harmer), his father's sister. Caroline and William went on to have 11 children of their own.

William junior was later on to settle at Gerang Gerung in Victoria, and with ?60 borrowed from his uncle William Haines, Ephraim Haines and young William were to commence to extract eucalyptus from gum leaves in a factory they built and worked for many years. William was said to have sent a bottle of eucalyptus to the Queen of England each year, and received a letter in return for his gift.

William married Rosetta Jane (nee Tucker) and they lived in a house built by William. They had four children (one my father) who recognised Ephraim and Mary Ann Haines as their grandparents, not Harmers. Family photos of the Haines are now kept in high regard for their dedication in the raising of William, for they allowed him to keep his surname HARMER.

In later years, on the death of Ephraim Haines, William inherited quite a lot of money, and was heard to say he wouldn't have to remove his coat and work again, but how wrong he was. William learned many crafts in his lifetime. Farming, bricklaying, as he built a brick house in Adelaide called REMRAH, Harmer in reverse which is still standing to this day. He learnt post and rail fencing and did contract fencing either side of the interstate Railway Line, and did schooling to further his education and was reported then to be a learned man. He was called upon by many a neighbour to work out mathematical problems for them - capacity of wells etc.

William found that money didn't last for ever, and for salvation in 1910, purchased 4000 sheep with an option of land for grazing, but a drought in that same year saw withdrawal of the land and he turned his sheep onto the Little Desert and later mustered less than a dozen. By this time he was living in Dimboola some 10 miles away. After a life of odd jobs, William later retired and lived in Horsham (Aust.) and built a two bedroom house for my father who raised 9 children in the residence.

William was later to go blind in the twilight of his life from diabetes, and had to be led by hand to visit his wife's grave, a distance of about 1 mile away. In his blindness he remarried a Mrs. Blake for companionship, who before his death had given away most of his possessions to the children from her previous marriage, with only a few old biscuit tins to be shared by his family at his death. William died on 31 January 1936 when I was only 3 months old. I am so sorry not to have know him, when talking to relations who knew him, and who thought so highly of him.

Editor's Note:- Bert is to be found on page A11 of the Heathfield Tree as Albert Leslie (11955).

?b?My Family, From My Great Grandfather William Harmer ?/b?
?b?By Bert Harmer Ararat, Victoria ?/b?
?b?Harmer Family Newsletter, September 2002 ?/b?
My Great Grandfather, William Harmer was christened on 9th Feb 1834 in Oving, Sussex, England. He was the seventh child in the family of twelve of Edward Harmer and Harriet nee Stacy. Edward was a sawyer living in the Chichester area of what is now known as West Sussex. Around 1840 Edward and Harriet arrived in Port Adelaide, Australia, aboard the 'Orleana'. Following his migration to South Australia William grew up in the newly established colony and city of Adelaide. William followed in his father's footsteps and became a sawyer by trade, as workers of timber were in great demand.

William met Maria Haines in Adelaide, the daughter of William Haines, gardener to the Governor of the new colony. William married Maria Haines in the Wesleyan Chapel, North Adelaide, South Australia on 9 December 1854. Maria Harmer gave birth to two sons, Ephraim in Steventon, South Australia in 1858 and my grandfather William on 9 November 1860 at Parkins Reef, Maldon, Victoria. Sadly Maria died it seems 20 months after giving birth to William. Great Grandfather William remarried in 1863 to 18 year old Caroline Barker at Tea Tree Gully, South Australia.

Being so young, it appears Caroline wasn't all that impressed in raising another woman's two young children. Young Ephraim was passed between two related families. It was not known if he was adopted officially by either of thesc families but my grandfather was officially adopted by my Great Grandfather's sister Mary Ann (nee Harmer) and her husband Ephraim Haines. Having off-loaded Ephraim and William. Caroline and my Great Grandfather went on to have twclve children of their own.

As a young William, my Grandfather was growing up, gold had been discovered in Victoria and several of the family headed off interstate to supposedly make their fortune in the town of Maldon in Central Victoria. It is hearsay that the Harmers weren't doing all that well, and as HFA member Enid White relates the story, disagreement arose relating to which direction the mine shaft should go. Not settling the argument, it was decided to sell up and return to Adelaide in South Australia as at that point, little gold was being extracted. It is family knowledge that millions of pounds of gold was retrieved from that mine in latter years.

Back again in South Australia, Ephraim Haines and my Grandfather William between them, borrowed 60 pounds from Ephraim Haines brother, William Haines (Parliamentarian and owner of Highcombe Hotel in Tea Tree Gully Adelaide) and they returned to Victoria and established a Eucalyptus factory at Gerang Gerung. (The Highcombe Hotel today in [Tea Tree Gully] Adelaide, is a museum).

Eucalyptus was extracted for many many years from their holdings in Gerang Gerung and this venture provided employment for a number of Harmer cousins. My father told me that my Grandfather William sent off a bottle of Eucalyptus oil to King George after each harvest and that they received letters of thank-you from the King each time, though no letters are evident amongst my collection of Harmer memorabilia today.

The Harmer household was nestled on the edge of what is called the Little Dcsert, and things were tough at times. My Grandfather, whilst in Gerang Gerung, undertook a correspondence course in mathematics and was called upon many a time by locals in calculating capacities of underground water tanks. To help survive due to a drought, he purchased a considerable flock of sheep as an investment, but the failure to obtain a plot
of land to run the sheep, promised to him by a neighbour, meant that he had to turn the sheep loose in the Little Desert. Only a few were ever retrieved after that drought.

The family shifted into the Dimboola, a township some 12 miles away and it isn't known how long they stayed there, but William and Roselta's eldest daughter Elsie Maud Anderson Harmer fell pregnant to a young Catholic lad. The shame of it caused William to borrow money from his father-in-law, Fred Tucker, so that the family could move on to a property that had a considerable sized orchard. about 5 miles West of Horsham where, unseen, his daughter could come to full term with her illegitimate child. Mirium Joyce was born in 1916 and was raised as one of the family. The Harmers moved into the town of Horsham itself around the early 1920s. After the death of my Grandmother Rosetta whom Mirium Joyce callcd "Mother", one of my father's sisters broke the news to her that she was illegitimate. My Dad (Alf) told me, that he went to his sister (whom I won't name) and blew the tripe out of her. As a young lad, I can't remember my parents being very close to that sister after that, though I can recall we made one visit for whatever reason I am now not sure.

Albert Leslie Harmer (1935-2009)?/b?
?b?By Cora Num?/b?
?b?Harmer Family Newsletter, June 2009, pages 3-5 ?/b?

It is with much sadness I report that Bert Harmer, the Australian membership secretary for seventeen years, has passed away after a battle with cancer. All Australian HFA members would have had contact with Bert and would know what a genuine, friendly and helpful person he was. His wife Elaine and his family have generously shared many of their memories of Bert with me and I thank them for doing so.

Albert Leslie Harmer (Bert) was born in Horsham, Vic on 2 Nov 1935, the son of William Alfred Stacy (Alf) and Eleanor Mae (Mae) Harmer nee Johnson (SSX A11). He was the sixth child in a family of nine. Bert grew up in Horsham and lived at 13 Bradshaw Street. He attended Horsham state school until year seven.

Bert was a religious man and in 1954 while attending the Horsham Church of Christ he made a bet with his best mate that he would be the first one to go out with Elaine Jenkins, the new girl at church. Bert won this bet and it turned out to be the best and most significant bet of his life. For on the 4 Aug 1956 Bert and Elaine were married. Following their marriage they lived in Apsley and then moved to Ararat, Vic in 1958.

Bert was a man who could turn his hand to anything and everything, a trait that allowed him to always provide well for his family. He started work as an apprentice at REPCO, became a storeman at Youngs, worked for Wilson Bolton in Warracknabeal, the Kowree shire and McCracken's Tyre Service. Bert then went on to manage the Ararat Disposals store and then he worked for Gason's, a design and engineering firm manufacturing agricultural machinery. He was employed there as a welder, sheet metal worker and in the research and development section designing new machinery until he retired from full time work.

Bert was a devoted Christian and throughout his life he attended church each Sunday with his family. Over the years the family attended the Ararat Church of Christ, the Independent Baptist Church and the Presbyterian church. It didn't matter which church whatever was on, Bert was there. If anything needed doing, Bert would be there doing it. He served on the officers board and the church board of management. He was a lay-preacher, taught Sunday School, conducted Sunday School anniversaries and led the boys club. Both he and Elaine were camp parents and cooked for numerous church youth camps. In the 1990s he spent almost three years helping renovate and rebuild the Ararat Presbyterian church manse.

Bert, according to his family, was a man who could not sit still. Despite his huge involvement with the church he still found time to be involved in small bore shooting, the Ararat Pipe Band, wood gathering in summer to heat the house in winter, ferreting, fishing, oil painting, bee keeping, breeding birds and fish, gardening and growing orchids. Be it plumbing or crocheting, Bert did it with love.

Bert came from a family who loved to sing and Bert's love of music was passed onto his children. The family would sing together and harmonise with each other and make beautiful music. Bert also played the guitar and had to relearn to play after he cut off half his left index finger at work. Bert also led the singing at the Church of Christ for many years.

Whatever Bert did he involved his family. They went to church together, on holidays together, camping at Easter together, worked around the house together and built things together. The Harmer home in Ararat was always open to all and his kids often got up in the morning to find visitors camped on the kitchen floor.

The Harmer family was not affluent and Bert's philosophy was if you couldn't afford to buy it, you could make it just as well, if not better. For example, Bert wanted a power hacksaw, so he went to his mates who owned one, measured it up and made his own. It is still working 30 years later. He made his own mulcher, sheet metal bender and guillotine. He also made trailers and caravans. He tried fibre-glassing and made kayaks, car spoilers and carafoils. He even tried glass blowing, though this was not one of his more successful past times.

The hot water at his Ararat home is still heated with his home built solar hot water service. Over the past decade when Bert did something around the house he would say "this will see me out". Just before he died Elaine arrived home to the sound of gushing water. The plumbing job he did on the toilet cistern broke less than 4 hours before he died and yes it did see him out. The family are now wondering what else will break in the coming weeks.

Bert had a strong community involvement. He was president of the Aradale auxiliary. Aradale is Ararat's heritage listed mental hospital. He was a member of the friends of J-Ward. J Ward was a goldfields prison opened in 1859 which later became temporary housing for the criminally insane. When it closed in 1991 it became a museum complex. Bert was also involved with the Ararat Heartbeat support group and he was a member of the local Orchid Society.

In January this year Bert was awarded life membership of the Ararat Probus club. He joined Probus in October 1987, was president in 1995/96 and served one term as vice president, three terms as secretary/treasurer, a term as assistant secretary and was a committee member for 10 years. He was also a staunch
behind the scenes' worker for many years.

Amazingly Bert still found the time to be an integral part of the Harmer Family Association. He joined the Australian branch of the HFA, in November 1983, the year it was formed. In November 1986 Bert organised a highly successful Harmer Family Association reunion held in Ararat. Over 185 attended from five Australian states. In 1988 Bert helped organised another reunion held in Adelaide and over 120 attended.

In 1990 Bert took over the HFA membership role and for seventeen years he maintained the membership records and renewals. He also faithfully reproduced, collated and mailed the Australian HFA newsletters to our members. Bert only relinquished this position in 2008 when he became ill. His dedication to the HFA is much appreciated and recognised as is the support his family gave him. Thank you to his wife Elaine and his four children, Peter, Steven, Andrew and Ruth. Our thoughts are with you.

This photo, of Harmer Court, on the outskirts of Portland, Victoria was sent by Australian member Irene Harmer nee Harmer (11891) SSX A6.

Irene's father Gordon Frank Harmer 1913-1998 (11865) purchased 134 acres in North Portland in 1946. It was a bush block when he bought it and he worked very hard to clear it. It was done by using a team of bullocks, and later bulldozers as they came into use. He subdivided the farm in 1978 into 10 acre (approximately) blocks, so a road was made up the centre of the farm and this is how the name of the road, Harmer Court, came about.

Note on the 26 July 1820 Priscilla Shephard (dif spelling) married John Rogers and Harriett Harmer was a witness, the Harriett is a bit more open than the previous entry but the H is definitely the same as it is very flowery!

South Australian Passenger List Transcripts 1840 by Diane Cummings at

BACKGROUND NOTE:
Fellow Passenger - Daniel Gatward wrote to his brother Joseph in Hitchin, Herts., England on July 24th 1840:
I commence this letter to you with a mixture of pleasure and pain. The pleasure arises from the satisfaction with which I am sure all my relations and friends will receive the intelligence of our safe arrival in this colony, which we made after a very quick and good passage, bur we are all (viz. T. Horn, myself, Underwood and family) safe and well, and what I am sure will please you - there is every prospect of our doing well.

Upon our first landing we all enjoyed ourselves with a good blow-out with fresh provisions at the port, which is about seven miles from the town, and which distance, having to walk, completely tired us out, and being dark very few of our company reached the town without some mishap - such as losing ourselves, and some did not arrive until morning.
..... the balance of the letter discussed the climate, people and prospects, and concludes with
T. Horn has not yet chosen his section of land, but is at this time gone to Encounter Bay to look at some that is now open for selection. At present we have taken a public-house, which though rather out of the more busy part of the town, affords a very good living, and which we intend to continue for a short time, to allow us to look about us, instead of going headlong to work, as many have done. I hope we shall go out into the bush in a short time, and cultivate the land. We have heard a very good account of the district around Currency Creek and Encounter Bay, and I think it will form an important station.
