When Grandma was 25 she married my Pop McPhee, he was from the neighbouring township of Salsibury. They had a long and happy marriage until Pop's death in 1964. They had three children Clifford, Norma & Keith. Grandma was a well respected lady and at her funeral was remembered for her kindness and charitable nature and was described at being "the salt of the earth". Along with their own children she and my Pop reared Harold "Charlie" Seater a nephew of Pop's he lived with them until adulthood. Charlie joined the army and served and died in New Guinea whist trying to cross a river with his battalion to escape the Japanese bombers the during the latter part of the World War 2. They also reared me following the death of my mother Norma, I lived with with them up until the time I was married. I was well cared for. Grandma and Pop were always very good to me. Grandma didn't have much schooling due to the death of he mother, upon which she had to leave school to care for her father Ephriam and for her four brothers (At 11 Years of age), who when growing up caused her a few difficult and challenging times. Her father was very religious man who didn't approve of the boys going out drinking and doing things he considered very "un-christian". She told me stories of how the boy's would come home from a night out and lay on their beds and go to sleep she would have to remove their boots before their father found out they were drunk. Three of her brothers Ernest *Ern, Albert *Tony and Henry *Chook all served in the army during the 1st Wold War in France and all returned home safely. Brother William *Will died at an early age and Edward *Ned who worked has Blade shearer developed Rhumatiod Arthrites and was unable to work in later years, he lived with Grandma & Pop and did all the vegetable gardeing which meant there were no "shop bought" vegies needed, the garden also has an extensive orchards and grapevines. Grandma had a sister Edith who was about 9 years old when her mother died, she was sent to South Australia to live with relatives. She didn't her sister until she had grown up and returned to Victoria. Shortly after her return she married Alec Taylor within a short time of her marriage the Taylors moved to New Zealand to live on a farm at Winton on the South Island. The two sisters did not see one another for a further 40 years when Auntie Edie & Uncle Alec came to Australia to visit the families. They made two trips within about 10 years. I was about 12 years old when they first visited and the second time they were at the time of my wedding in 1963. Grandma passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Home in Ballarat in 1969 and was laid to rest with Pop in the Dimboola cemetery. This is just a few of the memories of Grandma, she told me many stories of family members from our past. I inherited her interest in the family history.
